ALLOTMENTS

The allotment plots in Albany Road, Bishop’s Waltham (Postcode SO32 1BY) are a really important community resource and need to be effectively managed. There are a total of approximately 180 plots, a mixture of full plots, half plots and quarter or starter plots. The Gardening Club rents the allotment site from Bishop’s Waltham Parish Council for a nominal annual rent of £1 (plus £24 administration fee!). In return the Gardening Club manages the site on behalf of the Parish Council. This means that the club collects rents and maintains the site in good condition, ensuring that hedges are cut and paths mown. The Gardening Club supplies mowers, strimmers and fuel for maintaining the allotment paths. A Trading Shed is also run at the allotments, currently open between 10 a.m. and 12 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays from the beginning of February until the end of October.

Allotment holders who fail to till their plots are asked to vacate, to enable the plot to be more effectively cultivated. When letting allotments, priority is given to Bishop’s Waltham Parishioners.

Anybody wishing to rent a plot (currently £17 per annum), a half plot (currently £11 per annum) or a quarter plot (currently £7 per annum) should contact the trustee responsible for allotment lettings:

Allotment rents are reviewed annually by the board of trustees and the recommendations discussed at the AGM in January.

In order to comply with the requirements of public liability insurance all allotment holders and any other person working on the allotment holder’s plot must also be members of the Gardening Club (currently £6 per annum).

A number of documents relating to the allotments are available. Clicking on the document name will open the document in a new window.
